Principles behind the party activities

• Autistic children predominantly are visual in their perceptions, so rely on this strength when communicating information.

• ASD kids tend to need physical challenges to de-stress.

• Lower functioning and higher functioning ASD kids can need very different activities to engage them.

• Use information from parent/caregivers to guide which games or activities to do at the party – you cannot please all ASD kids, but if you have two to four things to do, you maximize the chances that they will engage in some of your party activities.

• Always have a quiet room for de-stressing or for a child who cannot tolerate an activity.

• Structure and commit to paper the order of games, allowing time for children to learn how to play the game or adults to demonstrate the game, however simple. Send a list of games and the order of games to parents/caregivers who may explain the games to their ASD child before the party by means of reassuring the child.

• It is always wise to check with parents/caregivers if any of the proposed games will definitely deeply upset their child – you can then avoid that game or know to remove the child prior to starting the game.
